As part of this role, your responsibilities will involve proactive collaboration with various stakeholders, including engineering, product, finance, and accounting teams. Your key tasks will encompass the management of cloud resources, implementation of cost optimization strategies, and the assurance that cloud spending and usage align constructively with the organization's growth objectives.

Specific work responsibilities include the following:

  • Create, engineer, and sustain scalable data analysis dashboards for forecasting cost and usage, tracking cloud consumption metrics, and evaluating business scenario metrics.
  • Continuously oversee cloud consumption, actively investigate and raise concerns regarding anomalies and unexpected spikes.
  • Generate and furnish regular reports on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, complete with recommendations aimed at enhancing cost savings and operational efficiency.
  • Perform in-depth analysis to derive valuable insights that can inform both strategic and day-to-day operational decisions.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to support the budget and forecast process, particularly in managing consumption, showback, and identifying opportunities for savings.

Mercari's FinOps team holds a significant responsibility in the realm of enhancing cloud expenditure efficiency and bolstering business agility. We engineer a platform that empowers our organization to base its decisions on data, thereby creating the highest possible business value. It's important to note that the cloud infrastructure serves not only Mercari JP but also extends to Merpay, Mercari US, and other affiliated companies within the group. Therefore, any enhancements we make have the potential to impact the overall performance of the entire organization.

Qualities and qualifications sought for this role include:

  • A shared comprehension of and alignment with our company's mission and values.
  • Proficiency in working within a public cloud environment, particularly GCP and/or AWS.
  • Proficient in the development of data visualization tools, with experience in platforms like Domo and/or Looker.
  • Competence in data aggregation using SQL.
  • Knowledge and understanding of statistics.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, capable of effectively engaging in both technical and non-technical discussions.

The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • A FinOps certification.
  • Certification from a public cloud provider.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of public cloud pricing structures.
  • Familiarity with financial and accounting principles.
  • Prior experience in managing public cloud cost in projects within a larger organization.

Mercari conducts interviews with the aim of assessing three critical aspects: your enthusiasm for Mercari's mission, your alignment with our values, and your compatibility with our company culture. We place great importance on a shared commitment to both Mercari's and Merpay's missions, as well as the ability to embody our values in the pursuit of those missions. During the interview process, we will inquire about your past experiences to determine whether Mercari is the right platform for you to demonstrate your skills.

We encourage you to articulate how you can leverage your previous experiences at Mercari and what opportunities for personal and professional growth we can provide. Addressing these points in your interviews will facilitate a mutual understanding of whether the position aligns with your goals. In our interview process, we recommend using the STAR method, an approach that allows you to provide detailed insights into your past actions. This method enables us to gain a comprehensive understanding of your experiences and abilities by posing questions that revolve around specific situations, tasks, actions, and results. We aim to make well-informed assessments and decisions throughout the interview process.

Circulate all forms of value to unleash the potential in all people

This question served as the inspiration for the creation of the Mercari marketplace app in 2013 by our founder, Shintaro Yamada, during his travels around the world. We firmly believe that by facilitating the circulation of various forms of value, extending beyond physical items and money, we can open doors for individuals to pursue their aspirations and make positive contributions to society and those in their proximity. Mercari is committed to leveraging technology to connect people across the globe, ultimately striving to build a world where everyone can unlock their full potential.
